As a pillar of our community, it’s crucial to recognize those who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe. That’s why I am immensely proud to share the recent efforts of our team at Indiana Estate and Elder Law in supporting the Westfield Police Department. Over the past two months, we had the privilege of working closely with the Westfield Police Department to provide essential estate planning services to their officers and their staff – nearly 50 wills and estate plans, all at no cost. This endeavor was not just a professional obligation but a heartfelt commitment to giving back to those who serve and protect us every day.
Coming from a family of law enforcement officers, including my father, I understood at an early age that their job came with risks. Interestingly, while in law school, my Criminal Law professor required us to do a ride-along with a law enforcement officer. One night, I joined my father to satisfy this requirement. As we ended our shift, we were heading home around midnight when a vehicle nearly hit us head-on. The driver was intoxicated. I think about that night still today. What if my father did not swerve and miss the vehicle? What if the person behind the wheel had a gun?
When I set out to create estate plans for Westfield Police Department officers and staff, I simply wanted to offer them some peace of mind. While an estate plan does not protect these officers from the daily risks they face each day, it was my hope it would offer them and their families some solace in knowing that if something unexpected did occur, there was a plan.
The gratitude expressed by the Westfield Police Department throughout this entire process was heartwarming. Each day I met with officers and staff up to the day we finalized that very last plan, they were so grateful that their families now have the necessary plans in place for whatever life may bring. It was my honor to contribute to their peace of mind and security.
